HIGHLAND, Kan. - Wrapping up a busy weekend of activity on the Highland campus, Ben Allen Field House again played host to some of the best high-school volleyball in the area, with the third annual 4-State All-Star Game along with the Northeast Kansas All-Star Game.
Contested over four sets with the final played to 15 points, both matches were highly competitive affairs. In the 4-State match, the Gold team prevailed 25-23, 25-20, 25-22, 15-13, but Raytown (Mo.) High School's Arlivia White Williamson displayed next-level talent alongside Conestoga (Neb.) High School's Maggie Fiene for the Navy squad.
The Northeast Kansas All-Star Game was a back-and-forth affair, with the Navy squad winning the first set 25-20 before a Brooklyn Wiltz kill off the block tied the match at 1-1 with a 25-18 set win for Gold. Navy jumped out to an early set three lead, but Gold rallied at the end of the set, following an attack error with a service ace by Axtell's Natalie Strathman. A long rally at 24-17 came to an unexpected end as a free ball sent onto the Gold side of the net was misread, landing just inside the sideline short of the attack line.Â
The Gold squad was able to finish the comeback in the fourth set, however, winning a back-and-forth tug of war for a 15-13 fourth set win and a 2-2 match tie.
In addition to the exciting action on the court, Highland was able to collect nearly 50 pounds of non-perishable food items for the HCC Food Pantry.
