Highland Women Earn Pair of Victories at the Ambassador Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 A change in the schedule late in the week led the Highland women's basketball team to Colby, Kansas for a pair of games in the Ambassador Classic hosted by Colby Community College.

Highland squared off with McPherson College JV and the host of the tournament Colby on Friday and Saturday respectively and picked up wins in each contest. Scotties beat McPherson JV in routing fashion 116-59 and then had a battle with Colby using a strong fourth quarter to win 70-56.

Scotties opened up the action in Colby with a matchup against McPherson JV and opened the game with a 30-14 first quarter to take control of the contest and just continually extend the lead throughout the contest. Highland dropped 40 points in the second quarter and held a 70-36 score at halftime. An 18-8 third quarter by the Scotties grew the lead even more and ultimately Highland secured the 116-59 win.

Six double figure scorers led Highland on the day as the Scotties surpassed the century mark for the third time this season and shot 49% from the floor in the win while forcing 30 turnovers. Janiya Davis with 21 points led the Scotties as she was 8-9 from the free throw line, while Tuana Dinc dropped 20 points with eight rebounds. Stefania Chiziane tallied 19 points and added seven assists and six steals in the win, while both Armani Turner and Tiana Gipson each tallied 15 points each. Khaliah Hines chipped in double figures tallying 11 points.

Game two of the Ambassador Classic proved to be a battle for the Scotties as they took on the host of the tournament playing Colby CC. After looking to grab ahold of the game with a 22-12 first quarter Highland carried that lead into halftime leading 35-25. The double figure lead evaporated in the third quarter as Colby put together a 23-14 stanza and even took the lead in the frame but the Scotties clung to a 49-48 lead entering the fourth quarter. Up only one Highland opened the fourth quarter on a 12-0 run to push the lead back to double figures and ultimately closed the game with a 21-8 fourth quarter to grab the 70-56 win.

Scotties were out rebounded in the game but forced 24 Colby turnovers and shot 40% from the floor to push themselves to the win. Chiziane paced Highland with 20 points, while added five rebounds and four steals. Davis again posted double figures tallying 19 points, while Turner put together a 12 point performance going 6-8 from the free throw line.

The pair of wins for Highland improved the Scotties to 5-0 on the season and marks 41-straight wins in regular season action a streak dating back to the 2016-17 season. Highland will have Thanksgiving week off from game action with their next game coming at home on Wednesday, November 28th against Metropolitan Community College. At 7:00pm.
